How to choose your preservatives and usage percentage

Preservatives are essential in skin care to prevent bacteria, mold and yeast from growing in your products. Preservatives help kill cell membranes and stop the growth of microbes in your skin care - organic, inorganic, or homemade.
Any skin care product that contains water and other materials made with water e.g rose water, witch hazel, papaya extract, aloevera and of course all hydrosols and floral water you can ever think of, then you need a preservative that can inhibit the growth of microbes.
Choose a water soluble preservative for your oil based scrubs, using an emulsifier to bind and combine the preservative in order to prevent the oil staying on one side and rendering the preservative useless.
Many people mistake rosemary extracts, vitamin E oil and grapeseed oil for a preservative but they are actually anti oxidants. Anti oxidants prevents rancidity of oils and butters, therefore these oils cannot prevent the growth of microbes in water based products. These oils can only be used in your oils and butters.
We will mention some preservatives and their usage percentage below:
Phenoxyethanol
Use 0.5 - 1%. This percentage can be used per 100g. Mix this preservative in your water phase before mixing  with other ingredients.
It is natural and can be used within ph range of 3-10. It prevents the growth of bacteria but does not prevent the growth of mold.
Germall Plus
Use 0.5% per 100g. It is synthetic and prevents bacteria and mould from growing. It can be used within ph range of 3-10.
Phenonip
Use 1% in water phase (like phenoxyethanol). It is synthetic. It prevents all bacteria and mould from growing. Use with an emulsifier.
Germaben II
Use 1%. It works within ph range of 3-8. It is synthetic and prevents bacteria and mould but only in less than 25% emulsion.
Germaben II - E
Use 1%. It is works just like Germaben but this one is more advanced as it is best for emulsion with more than 25% oil.
Optiphen plus
Use 1%. It is natural. It prevents bacteria but cannot protect against mould.
Sorbic acid
Use 0.3%
It is works within the ph range below 5. It is natural. It prevents mould but cannot effectively prevent the growth of bacteria. Sorbic acid is not advisable to be used in creams and lotions. It can therefore be used in herbal soaps.
Use your preservatives when the mixture is at cooling point. Do not overuse to avoid reactions on your skin.

What is a ph scale?
Ph scale is a scale of acidity from 0-14. It tells us how acidic or alkaline a substance is. Substances that are neither acidic nor alkaline are neutral. They usually have a ph 7. An acidic ph is less than 7. Alkaline greater than 7.
Ph is the measure of concentration of protons in a solution. The P stands for German potenz , it means power or concentration while the H stands for hydrogen ion.
Check out the following substances and their ph.
